Crayfish are a big mouth-full for big trout and bass. In some waters "big" fish will feed almost exclusively on crayfish.  JJ’s River King Crayfish Jig is a meaty solid meal for a big bass or lunker trout.  Crayfish are difficult to imitate with jigs and at best are highly impressionistic.

Even in high muddy water the "River King" gets the bass!

The claws are angled up to give the "fighting defensive" look of a real crayfish when threatened by prey.   It behaves just like a heavy poured jig head but still can maintain the silhouette of the crayfish without giving away a  "Hmmm, something doesn’t look right." to the fish.    The hook rides up so you can bounce it on the bottom where the real crayfish live and get virtually no snags!  It’s very surprising when anglers tell me that a great deal of fish eat this jig on its way to the bottom, but if this doesn’t happen, fish the River King Crayfish using a slow presentation to keep it in front of the fish while waiting for a strike.

A herd of brown and rusty-red crayfish jigs, all ready to catch you fish!

I get this question from anglers all the time; "Dave, why isn't your crayfish all red like the baits I see at other stores?"  There are several color phases of crayfish that live in our local waters.  Everyone is familiar with the phase that displays orange or red.  However other phases exhibit tans and browns. Many are individuals that have recently shed old shells.  Tan crayfish are often soft shelled.  These are especially appealing to game fish.  The fish have educated themselves and know that newly molted crayfish have a softshell and they are an "easy meal".  Most molted crayfish won't withstand an attack as readily as a crayfish whose exoskeleton is hardened.

That’s why JJ’s River King Crayfish can be purchased not only in the classic rusty red but in a brown and tan coloration.    The black colored crayfish is for muddy stained water.  The fish can see the black crayfish silhouette better than the brown and tans.  The main "softshell" molting  season starts around the first week or so of July and ends the second week or two of August.

(NOTE: Differences in the molting season can happen due to regional environmental changes, fluctuation in water levels, temperature, and weather patterns, but I list the dates as a general timeframe).
