I've heard a few words about the MB Jig;  Simple.  Deceptive.  Sparse.  Little.  Utilitarian.
Yes to all of those words...
but my favorite description was this:

It's simply gangbusters for fishing!

The Pink-headed, white MB Jig.  Taking the slabs - Courtesy of Mike Brown!

This Jig is named "MB" after Mike Brown, hence, the "MB" Jig. Why?  Because this fishy dude is 110% AWESOME when it comes to jigging!  Mike is one of JJ's Jigs Pro-Staff who hails from North East Pennsylvania.  You can usually find him slumming it at one of our local ditch-trickles or warmwater ponds.  And when you find him, he normally has an MB jig on the end of his line with a fish hooked up on that jig!!

But I'll let Mike tell you all about his way of using the MB Jig!

BEST PRACTICES on using the MB Jig
- by Mike Brown:

Don't be afraid to slow down with the MB Jig. The marabou tail undulates underwater even when the jig is at rest on the bottom. For finicky crappie and bluegill, short and slow hops interrupted by 5-10 second "sit periods" on the bottom can be deadly. Also, if the bottom is relatively clean, something as simple as a slow methodical drag can work wonders. I've caught huge yellow perch using this method. When the fish are aggressive, or just higher in the water column, swimming the MB Jig works best. Lift the rod from the “nine to noon position” and impart some subtle twitches and let the lure sink on a tight line. Watch the drop! LOTS of fish will come as the jigs sinks on a tight line. In fact, when the crappies are aggressive, sometimes nothing more than a cast and allowing the lure to sink on a tight line can be effective.

Also, the smaller versions of theJig-A-Bugger are deadly when fished in this manner. The hackle on the Jig-A-Bugger allows the jig to sink much slower and stay in the strike zone much longer than the MB.  This can be just the ticker for suspended crappies that are schooled up and chasing minnows or emergent insects near the surface. I like to keep a selection of Jig-A-Bugger's on hand for this purpose. Where the MB sinks quickly and can miss neutral fish that are higher in the water column or feeding near the surface, the Jig-A-Bugger can sink slower and catch the fish that the MB Jig may miss.

Bluegills seem to go bonkers for the MB fished under a float (also known as a "bobber" for the true dirtbaggers out there). The plastic, red and white bobber atrocities are to float fishing as Coors Light is to beer - a disgustingly pathetic excuse for the real thing like Yuengling Lager.   Anyway, The MB fished under a 'float or indicator" is deadly. My experience has been that this technique seems to attract its fair share of dinks. But it does work and especially in late evening, when the bigger fish move shallow, this technique brings in the slammers.

The Voo-Doo world of lure color: What colors do the fish like? I have no idea. If I knew the answer, I'd be drinking beer in a hammock on a tropical island far, far away from here and hire a guy named Hans to manage my Swiss bank account.

But, opinions are like assholes - everybody's got one. And so do I. For some strange reason, I've done exceptionally well with a pink jighead with a white body. The pickerel just love this pattern.......and I haven't the slightest idea why. So do perch, bluegill and crappie. All white is great choice too. I really like yellow (jighead and body) too, especially for bluegill. Most of my crappies came on a silver jighead with a chartreuse body. I also like all-black. The bottom line is this: It's not marketing or a sales pitch - it's the truth. Get a few different colors. One color will not work all of the time. Period. 'Nuff said. - Mike Brown

Thanks for your thoughts on the MB Jig, Mike.  But please don't think you have to be an expert like Mike to use these jigs.  Heavens NO!  Just look below at the "youngbloods" catching the slabs too!

My son - Joel "King of the Blue Gills" Pelachik.  He caught this palm-sized slab on a white JJ's MB Jig.  He said; "Daddy, your jigs are AWESOME!"  Yes they are, Joel.  Yes they are!

His big brother Josh asked me; "Hey, how come Joel is catching all the big fish?  My answer:  "Well Josh, that's simple...  he is using a JJ's MB Jig and your NOT!"  So Josh decided to try an all black MB Jig.  Well, wouldn't ya know it... he started catching fish!!

I just had to show off this picture of my 6 year old son, Joel.  He caught his very first rainbow trout on Monday April 16, 2012 on a white bodied - pink head MB Jig.  That's right...  Beginner to advanced an MB Jig is right for you!

Joel also caught his very first Largemouth Bass on 5/9/12 using a 1/8 ounce all-black MB Jig.
